The economics of EV battery recycling present a complex challenge, with salvage yards and recyclers struggling to make ends meet. The issue is twofold: the high cost of shipping and processing batteries, and the lack of a clear profit margin in recycling. This is particularly true for lithium-ion batteries made with iron phosphate (LFP), which are cheaper to produce but present a recycling conundrum. The lithium in these batteries is still valuable, but the cost of extracting it is high, making it difficult for recyclers to turn a profit. This has led to a reluctance among recyclers to accept these batteries, and a risk of them ending up in landfills or being shipped overseas to unsafe recycling facilities. Colorado's new law, which holds manufacturers responsible for the recycling of unwanted EV batteries, is a step in the right direction. However, the broader industry must also take responsibility for ensuring that these batteries are properly recycled, and that the supply chain is optimized to make recycling profitable for all parties involved.
